Style in the Rough

Henry Miller said of Big Sur, Calif., that it is “a region where extremes meet,” and the same might be said of its hotels: there have long been only a handful of options between the luxurious Post Ranch Inn and the charming but ramshackle Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. Enter Glen Oaks Big Sur. A 1950s motor lodge that’s been under renovation since 2008, Glen Oaks offers guests the feel of a cabin in the redwoods with some major differences: comfort and style. The owners, Basil and Tracy Sanborn, did not give the structure a face-lift so much as an upgrade, keeping its original adobe walls but adding bamboo floors, designer sinks, double walk-in showers, heated bathroom tiles, modern gas fireplaces and fire pits, Internet access, organic bedding and Pendleton throws. “We always felt there was an untapped niche here,” says Basil, who was born in Big Sur. “Reasonable, high-quality rooms that would attract a demographic not unlike ourselves.” The Sanborns also added cabins to the property, which sit along the Big Sur River on what was previously a campground. Visitors who want to savor one of the most undisturbed forests along the California coast needn’t worry: televisions are still a no-no.
